| Atom | The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element |
| Element | A substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means |
| Compound | A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
| Pure Substances | a sample of matter, either a single element or compound , that has definite chemical and physical properties |
| Heterogeneous | Describes something that does not have a uniform structure or composition throughout |
| Homogeneous | Describes something that does have a uniform structure or composition throughout |
| Solid | The state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance is fixed |
| Liquid | The state of matter which the volume is definite but not a definite shape |
| Gas | The form of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume |
| Freezing | A change of state from a liquid to a solid |
| Melting | A change of state from a solid to a liquid |
| Evaporation | A change of state from a liquid to a gas from a wide range of temperature |
| Boiling | A change of state from a liquid to gas from a specific temperature |
| Condensation | A change of state from a gas to a liquid |
| Sublimation | The change from a solid directly to a gas |
| Deposition | The change from a gas directly to a solid |
