| compound | a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements that are joined by a chemical bond |
| mixture | a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
| pure substances | a sample of matter either a single element or single compound that has definite chemical and and physical properties |
| heterogenous | describes something that does not have a uniform structure or composition throughout |
| homogeneous | describes something that has a uniform structure or composition throughout |
| solid | the state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substances are fixed |
| gas | a form of matter that does not have a definite shape or volume |
| freezing | the change of state form a liquid to a solid |
| melting | the change of state from solid to liquid |
| evaporation | the changes of state from a liquid to a gas usually occurs at the surface of liquid over a wide range if temperatures |
| boiling | the change of state from a liquid to gas that ocurrs at specific temperatures |
| condensation | the change of state from a solid to a liquid |
| sublimation | the change of state from a solid directly to a gas |
| deposition | the change fo state form gas directly to a solid |
| liquid | the state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape |
