Forces
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Force | A push or pull |
| Newton | The SI unit force is measured in |
| Net Force | Combination of all forces acting on a object |
| Unbalanced Forces | Cause velocity of an object to change |
| Balanced Forces | Equal forces acting on one object in opposite directions |
| Friction | 2 surfaces exert pressure on each other |
| Static Friction | Friction that acts on objects that are not moving |
| Sliding Friction | Happens when 2 solid surfaces slide over each other |
| Rolling Friction | When an object rolls across a surface |
| Fluid Friction | When a solid object moves through a fluid |
| Gravity | A force that pulls objects towards each other. |
| Mass | The measure of the amount of matter in an object |
| Weight | Gravitational force exerted on an object at the surface of a planet |
| Free Fall | The only force acting on an object is gravity |
| Air Resistance | Acts on objects falling through air |
| Projectile | An object thrown |
| Compression | An elastic force that squeezes or pushes matter together |
| Tension | An elastic force that stretches or pulls matter |
| Inertia | The tendency of an object to resist a change in motion |
| Momentum | A characteristic of a moving object that depends on both mass/velocity of an object |
| Law of Conservation of Momentum | States that the absence of outside forces, the total momentum of objects that interact does not change |
| Satellite | Any object that orbits another object in space |
| Centripetal Force | Any force that causes an object to move in a circular path |
