antiarrhythmic corrects or controls cardiac arrhythmias
antibiotic use to treat infections by killing or inhibiting the growth of disease causing bacteria. 2 types: bacteriacidal- kills bacteria or bacteriostatic- inhibits the growth of bacteria
anticoagulant prevents or delays blood clotting
antidepressant prevents, cures, or eleviates mental depression
antidiabetic prevents or releives systoms of diabetes
antidiarrheal prvents or treats diarhea
antidiuretic an agent that surpresses the formation of urine
antiemetic an agent that prevents or releives nausea or votiming
antifungal agent that destores or inhibits the growth of fungi
antihistamine agent that opposes the action of histamine allergic reactions
antihypertensive agent that prevents or controls high blood pressure
anti-infective agent that combats infection
anti-inflammatory counteracts inflammation in the body
antineoplastic or cytotoxic prevents growth and development of meglingnic(cancer)cells
antitussive prvents or relieves coughing
antiulcer agent treats or prevents peptic ulcer and gasteric hybersecretion
antiviral agent used to treat virual infections (ex.AIDS OR HIV)
beta blocker treats hypertenison, angina and various heart rhythms
bronchodilator exspands the bronchi by relaxing bronchi muscles
calcium channel blocker (CCB) slows the influx of calcium into smooth muscle cells causing a decrease in arterial resistance and oxygen demand. used to treat angina, HTN (hypertension), intercrania bleeding and CHF (conjestive heart failure)
diuretic increase urine creation or production
hormone treats deficiency states where specific hormone levels are abnormaly low
hypnotic induces sleep or dual scences
immunosupressant agent decreases or inactivates the inmmune response to antigens
laxative prevents or treats constipation
lipid-lowering agent reduces blood-lipid levels
sedative exerts a soothing or tranquilizing effective on the body
skeletal muscle relaxant (SMR) relieves tenion in the skeletor muscles
vitamin prevents or treats vitamin deficiency and is used as a dietry supplement
adverse affects harmful effects
agonist a drug that binds to a receptor and produces an appropriate physicologic response that is similar to what an endogenous substance would do.
anaphylactic shock a sudden and severe allergic reaction that may be life-threatening
bioavailability the degree and rate at which a drug is absorbed into a living system or is made available at the site of physiologic activity
biotransformation the process of conversion of drugs within the body
dose-effect relationship the relationship between the dose of a drug (or other agent)that produces harmful effects and the severity of the effects on the patient
drug indication the exact reason for the use of a drug
half-life the time taken for the blood or plasma concentration of the drug to decrease from full to half.
overdose a TOXIC dose of a drug or other substances
side effects results of a drug, or other therpy in addition to or in extension of the desired therapeutic effects which are usually, BUT NOT ALWAYS, undesireable
tolerance the body's slow adaptation to a drug, higher and higher doses are required to achieve the same effect; reduced responsiveness to a drug.
toxicity the state of being noxious, refers to drugs ability to poison the body
adverse drug reaction(ADR) any unexpected obvious change in a patients condition that the phycian suppects may be due to a drug.
antagonist an agent that acts in physiologic opposition; in pharmacology, it is an agent that prevents an agonist from binding to a receptor, there by blocking its effects
