Chapter #1 Skills
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| accuracy | the closeness of a measurement to the true value of what is measured |
| astronomy | the study of the universe beyond earth |
| 3 types of variables | controlled experiment, scientific law, controlled variable |
| scientific notation | a system that makes very large or very small numbers easier to work with |
| bar graph | when you use scaled bars to repreent varies measurements when you want to compare a set of simular data |
| biology | the study of life and life processes |
| chemistry | the study of the composition, structure, properties and reactions of matter |
| circle/pie graph | using a divided circle with each slice representing a porportional fraction relates the part to the whole |
| controlled experiment | only one variable is changed at a time |
| controlled variable | everything has to be the same. The things that have to stay the same (study time, lighting) |
| conversion factor | a ratio of equivalent measurements that is used to convert a quanity from one unit to another |
| density | the ratio of a material's mass to its volume |
| density of water | 1g/cm3 |
| direct proportion | relation of which the ratio of 2 variables is constant |
| geology | the study of the origin, history, and structure of earth |
| hypothesis | a proposed answer to a question |
| inverse proporation | a relationship in which the product of 2 variables is a constant |
| length | the straight line distance between 2 points (use meter stick) |
| line graph | shows relationship of 2 variables, variable Y plotted VS variable X. shows how one variable responds to changes in the other variable |
| manipulated variable | causes the change in another variable (indendpent variable) |
