research the process of locating information from a variety of sources
primary source a document or record containing first-hand information or original data on topic
secondary source any work that is one step removed from the original source, usually describing, summarizing, analyzing, evaluating, derived from, or based on primary source materials
plagiarism taking the words or ideas of another and using them as your own
presentation delivery of a formal reading, talk, or performance
citation giving credit to the authors of a source information
rhetoric the art of speaking or writing effectively
tone a writer's or speaker's attitude toward a subject
syntax the way words and phrases are arranged to make a complete sentence
diction a writer's or speaker's choice of words
imagery descriptive or figurative language used to create word pictures; created by details that appeal to one or more of the five senses
transitions words or phrases that connect ideas, details, or events in writing
slogan a catchy phrase or statement often used to sell a service or a product
bandwagon a statement suggesting that everyone is using a specific product, so you should too
emotional appeal words and/or images that appeal to the audience’s emotions
testimonial a well-known person endorses/supports a product or service
expert opinion a statement in support of truth, fact, or claim by a specialist
comparison all facts and figures support one product and not the other, making consumers question the quality of the other product
connotation the associations that are connected to a certain word or the emotional suggestions related to that word
denotation the literal or dictionary meaning of a word
