Properties of Matter
The Physical Properties of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mass | The amount of matter an object contains |
| Volume | The amount of space something takes up. |
| Solid | A state of matter that has a definite shape and definite volume. the particles of a solid are tightly packed. |
| Liquid | A state of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape. The particles of a liquid are closely packed and can slide past each other. |
| Gas | A state of matter that has no definite shape and no definite volume. The particles of a gas move freely. |
| Melting | A change of state from a solid to a liquid. energy is added. |
| Condensation | The change in state from a gas to a liquid. energy is removed. |
| Evaporation | The change in state from a liquid to a gas. energy is added. |
| Freezing | The change in state from a liquid to a solid. energy is removed. |
| thermal energy | the total kinetic energy (energy of motion) of the molecules in an object. |
| Conduction | the transfer of thermal energy through direct contact. Ex: A frying pan on the burner of the stove. |
| Convection | the transfer of thermal energy within a liquid or gas. |
| Radiation | The transfer of thermal energy through electromagnetic waves. |
| Independent Variable | In a scientific investigation, the factor that is deliberately manipulated (changed). |
| Dependent Variable | In a scientific investigation, the factor that is measured or changes as a result of the independent variable. |
| Controlled Variable | In a scientific investigation, the factors that must remain the same throughout the experiment. |
