Energy and Motion
| Term | Definition |

| Motion | the state in which one object’s distance from another is changing |
| Reference Point | a place or object used for comparison to describe the position or motion of a person or object |
| Distance | the length of a path between two points |
| Displacement | the length and direction of a straight line between starting and ending points |
| Scalar | measurements that have magnitude, or size only |
| Vector | a measureable quantity that consists of both a magnitude and direction |
| Speed | the distance the object travels per unit of time |
| Velocity | the speed in a given direction |
| Acceleration | the rate at which velocity changes with time |
| Energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
| Kinetic Energy | the energy an object has due to its motion |
| Potential Energy | stored energy that results from the position or shape of an object |
| Gravitational Energy | potential energy related to an object’s height |
| Elastic Energy | the potential energy of objects that can be stretched or compressed |
| Mechanical Energy | an object’s combined kinetic energy and potential energy |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | energy can not be created or destroyed |
| Work | when an object is caused to move a certain distance |
