| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| AFFERENT | The direction of neuronal impulse from the body toward the CNS |
| Autonomic | Self-controlling or involuntary |
| Autonomic Nervous System | Division of the nervous system that controls the involuntary body function; consists of the sympathetic and parasympathetic division |
| Axon | The part of a nerve cell that conducts impulses away from a cell body |
| Blood-Brain Barrier | A barrier formed by special characteristics of capillaries to prevent certain chemicals from moving to the brain |
| Cell body | The main part of a neruron from which axons and dentrites extend |
| CNS | Brain and spinal cord |
| Cerebrospinal fluid | A fluid that fills the ventricles of the brain and also lies in the spaces of the brain or spinal cord and the acrachnoid layer of the meninges |
| Cervical | neck region |
| Dendrites | the part of a neuron that branches out to bring impulses to the cell body |
| Efferent | The conduction of electrical impulses away from the CNS to the body |
| Lumbar | The region of the back that includes the area between the ribs and the pelvis, area around the waist |
| Monoamine Oxidase | An enzyme (includes MAO-A and MAO-B) found in the nerve terminals, the neurons and liver cells, it inactivates chemicals such as tyramine, catecholamines, serotonin, and certain medications |
| Nerve Terminals | The end portion of the neuron where nerve impulses cause chemicals to be released, those cross a small space, called synaptic cleft, to carry the impulse to another neuron |
| Neuron | The functional unit of the nervous system which includes the cell body, dendrties, axon and terminals |
| Parasympathetic Nervous System | Division of the autonomic nervous system that functions during restful situations; breed or feed part of the autonomic nervous system |
| Peripheral Nervous System | The division of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord |
| Somatic | The motor neurons that control vluntary actions of the skeletal muscles |
| Sympathetic Nervous System | Division of the autonomic nervous system that functions during stressful situations; "fight or flight" part of the autonomic nervous system. |
| Thoracic | Relates to the thorax area of the chest |
