| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | The ability to cause change |
| Mechanical Energy | Energy that moves objects |
| Sound Energy | results from the vibration of particles on a solid, liquid, or gas |
| Chemical energy | Energy that is stored in the chemical composition of matter |
| Thermal Energy | The total amount of energy from the movement of particles in matter |
| Electromagnetic Energy | Transmitted through space in the form of invisible waves |
| Nuclear energy | When a heavy atom's nucleus breaks apart or the joining of two atoms |
| Kinetic energy | The energy of motion |
| Potential energy | Stored energy that an object has due to it position or chemical composition |
| mass | A measure of how much matter an object is made of |
| Matter | Anything that takes up space. Solid, liquid, gas |
| Thermometer | device used to measure temperature |
| Temperature | measured in ºC and ºF |
| Conduction | the process that moves energy from one object to another |
| Conductors | Materials that transfer energy easily. Keeps heat out |
| Insulators | poor conductors of energy. Keeps heat in |
| Convection | The process that transfers energy by the movement of large numbers of particles in the same direction within a liquid or gas. |
| Radiation | Energy that travels as electromagnetic waves |
| ºC | Water freezes at 0℃ Water boils at 100℃ |
| ℉ | Water freezes at 32℉ Water boils at 212℉ |
| Conduction, convection, radiation | 3 ways thermal energy is transferred |
| Heat | another term for thermal energy |
| Scientific Method | Process for experiments |
| Hypothesis | prediction written as an if_____ then statement |
