Reading Academic Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Genre a type of literature
Paraphrase to put text into your own words
Synonym a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase
Antoymn a word opposite in meaning to another
Plot the events that make up the story
Setting where and when a story takes place
Conflict also known as the problem
Central conflict the main problem in the story
Resolution how the problem was solved/how the story ended
Cause the "why"- happens 1st
Effect the "what happened"-- happens 2nd
Trait a distinguishing quality or characteristic belonging to a person
Feeling an emotion state or reaction
Motivation the reason one has for acting or behaving in a particular way
Dialogue conversation or talking between two or more people
Direct Quotations exact words of someone else woven into your writing
Narrator the person telling the story
First person narrator a person in the story is telling the story
Third person narrator a person outside the story is telling the story
Theme the overall message/life lesson/moral of the story
Point of view the perspective of which the story is narrated
Foreshadow a warning or indication of a future event
Prediction a statement about what will happen or might happen in the future
