Film Analysis Terms
Term | Definition |

Framing: Establishing shot | To show where the action is taking place |
Framing: long shot | A shot in witch figures appear small in the landscape. often used at the beginning of a film or sequence as an establishing shot; also a figure appear small or isolated |
Framing: Medium shot | shows the figure from approximately the waist to head. In mid shot, you know who you are looking at and can see what they are doing with there hands |
Framing: Close up | Head and shoulders |
Camera angles: High | Camera looks down to make the subject look insignificant |
Camera angles: Low | Make the subject look big or intimidating |
Camera angles: Eye line | Camera looks out of character's eyes and sees what he sees |
Editing: cut | One image is suddenly replaced with another. |
Editing: Fade | An Images fades completely to black or another image |
Editing: Dissolve | One image dissolves into another |
Lighting: High-key | Bright and low contrast |
Lighting: Low-key | Darkish but pronounced shadows |
Lighting: Side Light | One side it lit up the other is shadow |
Lighting: Back | Produces halo effect/ out line |
Lighting from below | threatening or horrific |
Sound: Digetic | Sound that we think is part of whats going on screen, thunder, wind |
sound: Non-Digetic | sounds that we know is not a part of what's on screen, Music |
Focus: soft | Slightly out of focus |
Focus: rack | Bright in background/ foreground |
Focus: Deep | Everything is in focus |
Camera angles: Dutch | Camera is slightly tilted |
Camera angles: Pan | Pivots left or right on a horizontal axis |
Camera angles:Tilt | Pivots on a vertical axis |
Camera angles: zoom | Zooms in or out making things looks small or large |
Camera angles: Tracking or dolly | Moves with the action |
Lighting: Front | No Shadow, makes the subject appear innocent |
Sound: Internal | Only one character can hear |
Editing: Crosscut or Parallel | showing clips of seperate places transitioning form one to the other |
Editing: Flash | Convention designed to give the viewer important information about past events |
Editing: Eye line match | Three or more shots; character, what character sees, character's reaction |
Rhythm and Duration | Length between editing methods |
Mis-en-scene | Theatrical term of what appears to be onstage or on camera |
