Wave Characteristics

QuestionAnswer
What is a wave? A wave is a traveling disturbance that carries energy from one place to another.
Where do waves get their energy from? Vibrations
The matter that transmits a wave is known as? A Medium
Waves that require a medium are known as? Mechanical waves
Waves that disturb electric and magnetic fields are known as? Electromagnetic waves
All waves have these 3 characteristics. Amplitude, Frequency, Wavelength
The highest point of a wave is known as the? Crest
What does the trough of a wave represent? The lowest point of a wave
Which wave characteristic represents the maximum amount of energy the wave is carrying? Amplitude
The distance between two consecutive crests or troughs is known as the? Wavelength
The number of complete waves that pass a certain point in a given amount of time is known as the? Frequency
The frequency of 1 hertz is equal to what? 1 wave per second
The horozinal line on a wave graph is known as the? X-Axis
The vertical line on a wave graph is known as the? Y-Axis
If 50 waves pass a certain point in one second, what is the frequency? 50 Hz
If 100 waves pass a certain point in 5 seconds, what is the frequency? 500 m/sec
A wave in which the motion of the medium is at right angles to the direction of the wave is known as? Transverse wave
A wave in which the motion of the medium is parallel to the direction of the wave is known as? Longitudinal wave
This is an example of a longitudnial wave? Sound
In a longitudinal wave, the part of the medium that has fewer molecules is known as? Rarafactions
In a longitudinal wave, the part of the medium that has the most molecules is known as? Compressions
Speed of a wave= Frequency x Wavelength
What is the speed of a wave given the following information: Frequency: 4 Hz, Wavelength: 2 m 8 m/sec
What is the speed of a wave given the following information: Frequency: 100 Hz, Wavelength: 5 m 25 m/sec
For an electromagnetic wave to travel it must disturb what? An electric and magnetic field

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
