Figurative Language Academic Vocabulary Quiz

figurative langague a way of CREATING IMAGES with words
simile a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind. Unlike metaphor, you use "LIKE" or "AS" in the comparison. Ex: Hot cocoa was as thick and rich as melted chocolate bars.
metaphor a metaphor is when you use two nouns and compare or contrast them to one another. UNLIKE SIMILE, you DON'T USE "like" or "as" in the comparison. EX: Life is a journey
onomatopoeia the use of WORDS that SOUND what they mean EX: chatter, chirp, cluck
personification giving a HUMAN CHARACTERISTICS to something NONHUMAN Ex: The stars in the sky danced playfully
analogy drawing a COMPARISON in order to SHOW SIMILARITY in some respect EX: A lad is a boy as a baby is to an infant
idiom words, phrases, or expressions that can not be taken literally. In other words; they have meaning other than the basic one you would find in a dictionary. EX: Skeletons in the closet
alliteration a REPETITION of the SAME LETTER or SOUNDS at the beginning of two or more adjacent words or stresses syllables. Ex: Sweet birds sang songs
imagery the use of language to CREATE MENTAL IMAGES and SENSORY IMPRESSIONS EX: The kittens fur is milky white.
sensory detail details in a writing that DESCRIBES any of the 5 senses: SEE, HEAR, SMELL, TASTE or TOUCH
