Clinical observation Oldest method of studying brain-mind connections - observe effects of brain effects / injuries
Lesioning Destroys areas of brain with stereotaxic instruments by implanting electrodes on scalp to find brain-behavior relationships
Electrical stimulation Sends weak current into brain structure to activate it (determines brain-behavior relationships)
Electroencephalograph (EEG) Device monitoring electrical activity of brain over time by recording electrodes attached to surface of scalp (clinical diagnosis of brain damage / neurological disorders)
Computerized Tomography (CT / CAT Scan) Computer enhanced x-ray of brain to look for abnormalities among people suffering a specific type of brain illness
Positron Emission Tomography (PET Scan) Monitors brains activity over time with use of radioactively labeled glucose (pinpoints areas of brain that handle various activities, effects of neurotransmitters)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Uses magnetic fields, radio waves, and computer enhancing to map brain structures (best way to take detailed pictures of brain's soft tissue / fluid filled areas)
Functional MRI (fMRI) New variations of MRI technology that monitor blood and oxygen flow of brain to identify high activity - monitors brain structure and functions in real time
