Hyberbole an exaggerated statement used especially as a figure of speech
Foreshadowing giving the reader hints of what is to come
Flashback in the middle of one scene you are taken back to an earlier time

Suspense creates feeling of being anxious or uncertain
Symbolism when a person, place, thing, or event is used to represent something else
Irony when the intended meaning is the opposite of what is expected or shown
Onomatopoeia words that sound like the noise they name
Personification giving non-humans human-like qualities
Alliteration repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
Simile a comparison using like or as
Metaphor a comparison not using like or as
Idiom ordinary expressions made up of words that have meanings other than their literal definitions
