| Foreshadowing | giving the reader hints of what is to come |
| Flashback | in the middle of one scene you are taken back to an earlier time |
| Imagery | helps readers create pictures of words - the details appeal to your senses |
| Suspense | creates feeling of being anxious or uncertain |
| Symbolism | when a person, place, thing, or event is used to represent something else |
| Irony | when the intended meaning is the opposite of what is expected or shown |
| Onomatopoeia | words that sound like the noise they name |
| Personification | giving non-humans human-like qualities |
| Alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words |
| Simile | a comparison using like or as |
| Metaphor | a comparison not using like or as |
| Idiom | ordinary expressions made up of words that have meanings other than their literal definitions |
