chemistry the branch of science that deals with matter, the properties of matter, and the way in which matter interacts
property an attribute, quality or characteristic of a substance
physical property a characteristic of a property that can be observed without changing the substance into a different substance
chemical property a characteristic of a substance that determines how it interacts with other substances
matter anything that has mass and volume
mass how much inertia an object has
volume how much space an object occupies
physical change a change in the appearance of a substance; no new substance is formed
chemical change a new substance is formed because a substance is changed into a different substance
substance a type of matter define by a unique particle
mixture two or more substances mixed together, but they do not interact to form new substances
chemical reaction a process in which a substance becomes a different substance
reactant the substance(s) you have before a chemical reaction occurs
product the substance(s) you have after a chemical reaction occurs
Exothermic Reaction a chemical reaction that releases energy in the form of light or heat
Endothermic Reaction a chemical reaction that absorbs energy from its surroundings; usually in the form of heat
prediction what you expect to happen (future event) based on observations
observation information obtained through one or more of the five senses
inference an idea or a conclusion based on one or more observations and possibly prior experience
constraint a limitation or restriction
