What is the largest organ of the body? Skin
Skin is made up of 3 layers, name them. Epidermis, Dermis, Sub-cutaneous
What is the top layer of your skin made up of? A hard fibrous protein called keratin.
What forms whorls and patterns that make our fingerprint? keratin
As surface cells exfoliate, how often are they replaced? Every 30-45 days
Which layer of the skin are melanocytes in? Epidermis
What are melanocytes? Pigment producing cells
What is the Dermis layer of the skin made up of? Collagen and elastin
What is contained in the Dermis layer of the skin? Blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sweat and oil glands
What is the subcutaneous layer of the skin made up of? Fat tissue
Which layer of the skin is filled with fat globules, blood vessels and nerves. Subcutaneous
What are sweat glands? Tiny coiled tubes in the dermis that secrete sweat to coll the body during evaporation.
What does Integument mean? Skin
What is the Integumentary system made up of? Skin, hair, nails
What are sebaceous glands? Oil producing glands, located in or near hair follicles which produce oil (sebum) to prevent hair and skin from being dry and brittle
What is hair made up of? Keratin
What are the 3 things that make up hair? Root, follicle or sac, and a hair shaft.
What is the musle called that is attached to each hair? Erector Muscle
What does the erector muscle do? Reacts to emotion or cold, causing goose bumps and hairs to stand on end.
What does a nail consist of? Nail bed, cuticle, lunula and nail root.
Why is young skin so strong, soft, flexible and elastic? Because of keratin int he epidermis and collagen in the dermis.
What happens to your skin with age? The action of keratin in preventing dehydration decreases, the fat cells in the dermis decrease, and the elastic fibers from collagen decrease causing the development of folds or wrinkles.
How do skin and blood work together to regulate body temperature? They work to gether to dialate vessesl (when warm) or constrict vessels (when cold)
