| compass rose | an arrow on a map that shows directions |
| equinox | equal hours of daylight and darkness. This occurs twice a year on sept. 22 or 23 and march 22 or 23. During the equinox, the earth is neither towards the sun or away from the sun |
| revolution | one complete journey of the earth around the sun. It takes a year to complete this journey |
| revolve | to turn. The earth turns around the sun |
| rotation | one complete turn of the earth on its axis. The earth makes a complete rotation on its axis every 24 hours |
| axis | an imaginary line running through the earth from the north pole to the south pole |
| parallels of latitude | lines on a map or globe that circles the earth from west to east. These lines help us locate places in the world. |
| meridians of longitude | lines on a map or globe that run from the north pole to the south pole. These lines also help us locate places in the world |
| legend | a key on a map that explains the symbols on the map |
| isthmus | a narrow strip of land that connects two larger pieces of land |
| intermediate directions | the "in between" directions on a compass such as north west or south east |
| cardinal directions | one of the four main directions of the compass north, south, east, and west |
| grids | a series of lines on a map or globe that cross each other at right angles. Grids are labeled with letters and numbers |
| scale | a ratio that compares map distance to actual distance |
| plateau | flat or gently rolling land that stands high above sea level |
| climate | the usual weather over a long period of time |
