TermDefinition
science The study of natural world through observation and logical reasoning;leads to a body of knowledge.
observing The process of using one or more of your senses to gather information.
inferring The process of making an inference, an interpretation based on observations and prior knowledge.
predicting The process of forecasting what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence.
chemistry The study of the properties of matter and how matter changes.
physics The study of matter, energy, motion, and forces, and how they interact.
scientific inquiry The ongoing process of discovery in science.
hypothesis A possible explanation for set of observation or answer to a scientific question.
parameter A numerical or other measurable factor forming one of a set that defines a system or sets the conditions of its operation.
manipulated variable (independent variable) A manipulated variable is a independent variable in an experiment.
responding variable(dependent variable) The responding variable is the variable that changes the result when you add more stuff to the manipulated variable.
controlled experiment In a controlled experiment, an independent variable is the only factor that is allowed to be adjusted, with the dependent variable.
data Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.
communicated Share or exchange information, news, or ideas.
model (scientific) Scientific models can be material, visual, mathematical, or computational.
scientific theory A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing.
scientific law A scientific law is the description of an observed phenomenon.
graph The definition of a graph is a diagram showing the relationships between two or more things.
horizontal axis Horizontal axis is a straight line about which a body or geometric object rotates or may be conceived to rotate.
vertical axis The vertical axis line is near the center.
origin the point or place where something begins.
coordinate Coordinate means to arrange the proper position .
data point an identifiable element in a data set.
line of best fit A line of best fit is a straight line drawn through the center of a group of data points plotted on a scatter plot.
linear graph Linear graphs are one way of expressing these relationships, when graphed they give a straight line.
slope Slope means to slant or to incline away from a relatively straight surface or line used as a reference.
nonlinear graph A nonlinear graph is a graph that depicts any function that is not a straight line.
Qualitative Data Qualitative data is information about qualities; information that can't actually be measured.
Quantitative Data Quantitative data is information about quantities; that is, information that can be measured and written down with numbers.
