| Scientific Inquiry | The ongoing process of discovery in science, the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on evidence they gather. |
| Hypothesis | A hypothesis is a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question. |
| Parameter | Any factor that can be measured in an experiment. |
| Manipulated Variable | A variable purposely changed to test a hypothesis. |
| Responding Variable | A factor expected to change in response to the manipulated variable. |
| Controlled Experiment | An experiment where one variable is manipulated at a time. |
| Qualitative Data | Data that can be recorded as notes in a journal. |
| Quantitative Data | Data that consists of measurements. |
| Communicating | The sharing of ideas and experimental findings with others through writing and speaking. |
| Model | A picture, diagram, computer image, or other representation of an object or process. |
| Scientific Theory | Is a well tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results. |
| Scientific Law | A statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions. |
| Data | Facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations. |
