| allusion | reference to a well-known person, thing, or event |
| point of view | view from which the story is told. First-person (character) or third person (outside narrator) |
| conflict | struggle between two opposing forces |
| fiction | story that comes from the writer's imagination |
| figurative language | language that communicates ideas beyond the literal meaning of the words used |
| flashback | prior event that happened before the beginning of the story |
| foreshadowing | writer's use of hints for what is about to come later |
| imagery | words and phrases that appeal to the five senses |
| main character | person in the story who learns a lesson |
| metaphor | comparison of two unlike things |
| personification | giving something non-human, human-like qualities |
| plot | sequence of related events that take place in a story |
| setting | time and place in which the story takes place |
| simile | comparison of two unlike things using like or as |
| symbolism | concrete object used to represent an abstract idea |
| theme | important central idea or message that the author wants to share with the reader |
| characterization | author's method of presenting the character through speech, thoughts, actions, or what the author directly tells the reader |
| irony | unexpected situation or event |
| repetition | words or phrases repeated for emphasis |
