The Sun

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Cardinal Directions The four main directions of North, South, East, West.
Compass An instrument used to show directions. The needle of a compass rose points North.
Sun The star around which the Earth and 7 other planets revolve.
Revolution The motion of one body around another. The Earth revolves counterclockwise around the Sun every 365 days.
Rotation The turning of a body around an axis. The Earth rotates counterclockwise every 24 hours.
Horizon Boundary between Earth's surface and the sky.
Cycle A set of events or actions that repeat in a predictable pattern.
Predictable To estimate accurately in advance based on a pattern or previous knowledge.
Shadow The dark area behind an object that blocks light.
Season The four times during the year that bring predictable weather conditions to a region on Earth. Summer, Winter, Fall, Spring.
