| Term | Definition |

| fluency | the ability to use language clearly and easily |
| characterization | the methods a writer uses to develop characters; for example, through description, actions, and dialogue |
| setting | the time and place in which a narrative occurs, this might also include weather |
| conflict | a struggle between opposing forces; may be internal or external |
| resolution | the outcome of the conflict of a story; when loose ends are wrapped up |
| dialogue | a conversation between two or more characters |
| point of view | the mode of narration an author used to tell a story (first-, second-, and third-person point of views) |
| incident | a distinct piece of action, such as an episode in a story or a play |
| topic sentence | a sentence that expresses the main idea of a paragraph |
| thesis statement | a sentence in a text that identifies the main idea and/or central purpose of the text |
| hook | a literary technique found at the beginning of a story which grabs the reader's attention |
| cause | an initial action; an event that makes something else happen |
| effect | the result of an event or action |
| rhetoric | the art of effective communication using four main devices: diction; syntax; tone; and imagery |
| syntax | sentence structure |
| narrative | a type of writing that tells a story or describes a sequence of events in an incident |
| connotation | the associations that are connected to a certain word or the emotional suggestions related to that word |
| denotation | the literal or dictionary meaning of a word |
