| analogy | A comparison between two things that are alike in some way |
| anecdote | A short account of an event that is usually intended to entertain or make a point |
| annotation | The adding of explanatory or critical notes to a text |
| audience | The group of readers that the writer is adressing |
| author's perspective | The combination of ideas,values,feelings, and beliefs that influences the way the writer looks at a topic.Often revealed by the author's tone or attitude |
| author's purpose | What the author is trying to accomplish through the writing; usually to express thoughts or feelings, to inform or explain, to persuade, or to entertain |
| autobiography | A writer's account of his or her own life |
| biography | A true account of a person's live,written by another person |
| claim | A writer's position on an issue or problem |
| clarify | A reading strategy that helps readers understand or make clear what they are reading |
| connotation | An idea that is implied or suggested; the ideas and feelings associated with the word, as opposed to its dictionary definition |
