|---|---|
| Science | The study of the natural world |
| Observing | Using one or more senses to gather information |
| Inferring | Making an inference |
| Predicting | Making a forecast on what will happen in the future based on past experience or evidence |
| Chemistry | The studies of the property of matter and how matter changes |
| Physics | The study of matter, energy, motion, and forces and how they interact |
| Scientific Inquiry | The different scientists study the natural world |
| Hypothesis | A possible answer to a scientific question or explanation for a set of observations |
| Parameter | A factor that can be measured in an experiment |
| Manipulated Variable | The variable that is purposely changed during an experiment |
| Responding Variable | the variable that is expected to change in results to the manipulated variable |
| Controlled Experiment | An investigation in which only one parameter is manipulated at a time |
| Data | the facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations |
| Communicating | the sharing of ideas and conclusions with others through writing and speaking |
| Model | a picture, diagram, computer image, or any other representation of the process |
| Scientific Theory | a well-tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results |
| Scientific Law | a statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions |
| Graph | a "picture" of your data |
| Horizontal Axis | The line on a graph that runs left to right |
| Vertical Axis | The line on the graph that runs up and down |
| Origin | The point where two axes cross |
| Coordinate | A pair of numbers used to determine that position of a point on a graph |
| Data Point | The point showing the location of that intersection |
| Line of Best Fit | A smooth line that reflects the general pattern of a graph |
| Linear Graph | A line graph in which the data points yield a straight line |
| Slope | The steepness of a line graph |
| Nonlinear Graph | A line graph in which the data points do not fall along a straight line |
| Quantitative | The type of data that consists of measurements |
| Qualitative | The type of data that can be recorded in a journal or log, and they don't contain any numbers |
