TermsDefinition
Multimodal Therapy - (MMT) Founder Arnold Lazarus
Personality Theory The personality is divided into seven major areas of functioning.
Personality Theory - functions (BASIC ID) Behavior; Affective responses; Sensations; Images; Cognitions; Interpersonal relationships; Drugs (and related physiological functions, such as biological functions, exercise, and nutrition)
View of Maladaptive Behavior Sees maladaptive bheavior as being related to lack of functioning in one or more of the seven areas.
Therapeutic Goals The BASIC ID system allows for the identification of specific problems and areas where improvement in the client is needed; for more disturbed clients it may focus on "actualization and self-determination rather than pathology"
Therapeutic Techniques Evaluation or diagnosis is accomplished by assessing the client with regard to each of the seven modalities (BASIC ID) individually, as well as the interactions among them.
Eight Issues that should be addressed 1) Conflictin or ambivalent feelings the client may have; 2) Maladaptive behaviors of the clients; 3) Misinformation provided by the client; 4) Missing information, or information that the client does not, or is unwilling to, provide;
Eight issues (cont) 5) Interpersonal pressures and demands the client is experiencing; 6) External stressors outside the client's immediate interpersonal network; 7) Severe traumatic experiences suffered by the client; & 8) Biological dysfunctions experienced by the client.
