Personality Theory Regards the need for identity as a universal psychological need which is present throughout the life-span and is composed of two interrelated needs - a need for love and a need to feel one is worthwhile.
Success Identify See themselves as competent, capable, worthwhile, and loved.
Failure Identity Feel Helpless, hopeless, unworthy, and unloved
View of Maladaptive Behavior Responsibility is a central concept in reality therapy.
Responsibility Is defined as "the ability to fulfill one's needs, and to do so in a way which does not deprive others of the ability to fulfill their needs"
Therapeutic Goals The primary goal is to help the client become responsible and thereby develop a success identity.
Therapeutic Techniques Is a verbally active, intellectual, and confrontive form of therapy. It 1) rejects the concept of mental illness; 2) focuses on present behaviors;
Therapeutic Techniques (cont) 3) views transference as detrimental to therapy progress and encourages clients to relate realistically to the therapist; 4) stressed conscious rather than unconscious processes;
Therapeutic Techniques (cont) 5) emphasizes value judgments, especially the client's ability to judge what is right or wrong in his or her daily life; & 6) seeks to teach clients specific behaviors that will enable them to fulfill their basic needs.
