Science The study of the natural world.
Observing Using two or more senses to get info
Inferring Explaining your observation from what you already know
Predicting Making a statement about the future based on experience and current info.
Chemistry Properties of matter and how it changes
Physics Study of matter, energy, motion, and forces
Scientific Inquiry The different ways scientists study the natural world, the ongoing process of discovery
Hypothesis Possible answer to a question
Parameter Factors that can be measured
Manipulated Variable The one variable in an experiment that is purposely changed
Responding Variable The variable parameter that is expected to change because of the manipulated variable
Controlled Experiment An investigation in which only one parameter is manipulated at a time
Data The facts, figures, and other evidence gathered through observations
Qualitative Data Descriptions that don't include any sort of numbers; just words.
Quantitative Data Descriptions that only consist of numbers and measurements.
Communicating Sharing ideas and conclusions with others through writing and speaking.
Model A picture, diagram, computer image, or other representation of an object or process.
Scientific Theory A well tested explanation for a wide range of observations or experimental results
Scientific Law A statement that describes what scientists expect to happen every time under a particular set of conditions
Graph A visual representation of gathered data
Horizontal Axis The graph line that runs from left to right
Vertical Axis The graph line that runs up and down
Origin The point where the two axes cross
Coordinate A pair of numbers used to determine the position of a point on a graph
Data Point The point showing the location of an intersection
Line of Best Fit The smooth line that reflects the general pattern of a graph.
Linear Graph A line graph in which the data points yield a straight line
Slope The steepness of a graph line
Nonlinear Graph A line graph in which the data points don't fall along a straight line
