Academic Vocabulary

rhyme is a poem in which some of the verses end with the same sound
rhyme scheme the pattern of rhyming lines
verse a line in poetry
free verse the verses of the poem do not rhyme
stanza groups of lines in poems
meter the poem's pattern of sounds
internal rhyme a rhyme within the same line of verse
poetry a type of writing that uses figurative language to express, ideas, emotions and images
poetic structure this is the way the poem is put together
sound effect any sound, other than music or speech, artificially reproduced d to create an effect in a dramatic presentation
figurative language a way of creating images with words
