TermDefinition
Science Science is the process of studying nature and gaining knowledge about the world.
Observation What a scientist does to help them make a hypothesis or collect data during an experiment.
Prediction A statement of what will happen next in a sequence of events.
Inference A logical explanation of an observation that is drawn from prior knowledge or experience.
Hypothesis The hypothesis is an educated guess. Must always be written in the correct format, "If IV then DV"
Critical Thinking Comparing what you already know with information you are given in order to decide whether you agree with it.
Scientific Law A rule that describes a pattern in nature.
Scientific Theory An explanation of observations or events that is based on knowledge gained from many observations and investigations.
Technology A practical use of scientific knowledge, especially for industrial or commercial use.
Independent Variable The independent variable is the part of the experiment that is being tested or the part that is changed by the person doing the experiment.
Dependent Variable The dependent variable is the part of the experiment that is affected by the independent variable.
Control Group The control is part of an experiment that is not being tested and is used for comparison.
Constants ALL things that stay the same during an experiment.
Experimental Group The part of the controlled experiment used to study relationships among variables.
Thermometer Triple Beam Balance A tool used to measure temperature. UNIT: degrees F and degrees C.
Triple Beam Balance A tool used to measure the mass of an object. UNIT: grams
Graduated Cylinder A tool used to measure volumes. UNIT: mL
Results An explanation share to a specific group of persons, your result of the date collected during an experiment.
Conclusion After an experiment, scientist write a conclusion which summarizes their experiment and results.
Problem Must be a testable question.
Procedure The procedure describes the steps you use during an experiment.
