Vocabulary words describng nonfiction text features

TermDefinition
font styles words or phrases are written in different styles to draw attention to and emphasize the importance of; includes bold, italics, and highlighting
diagrams an illustration or photo that includes labels that name the parts that make up the object
charts and graphs visual representations of data to help the reader draw conclusions and see patterns and trends easily
captions short descriptions under photos or illustrations that name and /or explain
headings and subheadings Titles that distinguish different sections to organize topics and ideas
table of contents a list of the contents of a book and the page numbers where they can be found (in order of occurrence in the book), found in the front of a book
glossary an alphabetical listing of important terms and definitions found in the back of a book
index a listing of important topics with page numbers where they can be found, included in the back of a book (in alphabetical order)
Primary sources actual records that provide firsthand accounts of events. Examples: letters, diary entries or journals, photographs, speeches, interviews, autobiographies, artifacts.
Secondary sources- second hand accounts of primary sources; secondary sources comment on, summarize, explain, or draw conclusions from primary sources (or other secondary sources) Examples: textbooks, encyclopedias, articles, essays, biographies, summaries.
