Vocabulary words describng nonfiction text features
| Term | Definition |

| font styles | words or phrases are written in different styles to draw attention to and emphasize the importance of; includes bold, italics, and highlighting |
| diagrams | an illustration or photo that includes labels that name the parts that make up the object |
| charts and graphs | visual representations of data to help the reader draw conclusions and see patterns and trends easily |
| captions | short descriptions under photos or illustrations that name and /or explain |
| headings and subheadings | Titles that distinguish different sections to organize topics and ideas |
| table of contents | a list of the contents of a book and the page numbers where they can be found (in order of occurrence in the book), found in the front of a book |
| glossary | an alphabetical listing of important terms and definitions found in the back of a book |
| index | a listing of important topics with page numbers where they can be found, included in the back of a book (in alphabetical order) |
| Primary sources | actual records that provide firsthand accounts of events. Examples: letters, diary entries or journals, photographs, speeches, interviews, autobiographies, artifacts. |
| Secondary sources- | second hand accounts of primary sources; secondary sources comment on, summarize, explain, or draw conclusions from primary sources (or other secondary sources) Examples: textbooks, encyclopedias, articles, essays, biographies, summaries. |
