Reading Strategy-Inferencing

| Inference | Reading between the lines |
| Inference | text clues +background knowledge =educated guess |
| Inference | activating your schema to figure out |
| Inference | it is not stated directly in the text, but you are using information that is either explicit or implicit |
| Textual Evidence | Used to support our ideas or opinions about a text |
| Textual Evidence | Can be paraphrased or quoted directly from the text |
| Textual Evidence | Combining what the text says with your own thoughts |
| Textual Evidence | This must be cited to validate (make believable) your opinion. |
| Theme | opinion or lesson expressed throughout a piece of text |
| Theme | presented through characters thoughts, feelings, conversations or experiences |
| Theme | rarely stated explicitly, mostly implied |
| Theme | "Crime is always punished."; "Slow and steady wins the race."; "Revenge" and "Friendship" are examples of this. |
| Summary | Brief statement with the the main idea of a text |
| Summary | Make a text shorter |
| Summary | Give the "gist" or "essence" |

| Implicit | something that is understood but not clearly stated |

| Prediction | Use of background knowledge separates this from inference |
