Diaphragm Main breathing muscle of body.
Pharynx The Throat. A shared passageway for food and air.
Bronchioles Smallest branches of the branchial tree.
Respiration One complete exhalation and inhalation
Larynx Contains the vocal cords, passageway for inhaled and exhaled air. AKA voicebox
Hilum Indentation on the medial side of each lung where the bronchus, pulmonary artery and nerves enter the lung and the pulmonary vein exits.
Surfactant Protein-fat compound maintains lungs at birth and with each inhalation.
Phrenic Nerve Nerve that, when stimulated, causes the diaphragm to contract and initiate respiration.
Cilia hair like projections that filter particles.
Septum Wall of cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity into right and left sides.
Epiglottis flap of cartilage at top of larynx. prevents food from entering larynx and wind pipe.
Trachea Windpipe. It carries inhaled and exhaled air to and from the bronchi.
Alveoli Clusters
Pleura Membrane that lines the thoracic cavity. Covers the surface of the lungs.
Influensa Accute viral infection of the upper and lower respiratory systems.
Cyanosis Blue coloration of the skin due to lack of oxygen.
Upper Respiratory System Nose, nasal cavity and pharynx.
Lower Respiratory System Larynx (voicebox), trachea (windpipe), bronchi, lungs and diaphragm
