| plot | the sequence of events in a story |
| exposition | the first part of a story, which establishes the setting, characters, and background information |
| setting | where and when the story takes place |
| rising action | the stage in a plot in which the conflict develops and story events build toward a climax |
| climax | a turning point in the story, the point of maximum interest or tension |
| falling action | shows the results of the important action that happened in a story's climax |
| resolution | the end of the story, when all loose ends are tied up |
| conflict | a struggle between opposing forces: external (human vs. human, human vs. environment (nature), or internal (human vs. self) |
| protagonist | the main character in a story. He or she grows or changes. |
| antagonist | who or what is having the major conflict with the main character |
| theme | a life lesson that a character or the readers learns in a story |
| simile | a comparison between two unlike things using "like" or "as" |
| metaphor | a comparison between two unlike things NOT using "like" or "as" |
| atmosphere | the overall feeling of the setting |
| mood | the reader's feelings/attitude about the topic |
| point of view | the perspective from which the story is told (1st person, 3rd person limited, or 3rd person omniscient) |
