Rate of Reaction
Rate and extent of reaction
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Define rate of reaction | The speed of a chemical reaction. |
| Name the 4 changes that can be made to change the rate of a reaction. | Change the concentration (or pressure of a gas), temperature, surface area or add an enzyme. |
| What must particles do to react? | Collide (hit each other). |
| What must particles have enough of to react? | Energy |
| Define concentration | Number of reactant (or product) particles per volume of solvent. |
| Define surface area in a reaction | The exposed area of a solid reactant that can be in contact with a second liquid or gaseous reactant. |
| Define a catalyst | A chemical, atom, ion or molecule, that can speed up a chemical reaction without being used up. . |
| Define exothermic | A reaction that gives out energy and so it gets hotter. |
| Define endothermic | A reaction that takes in energy and so it gets colder |
