Rate of Reaction

Rate and extent of reaction

Define rate of reaction The speed of a chemical reaction.
Name the 4 changes that can be made to change the rate of a reaction. Change the concentration (or pressure of a gas), temperature, surface area or add an enzyme.
What must particles do to react? Collide (hit each other).
What must particles have enough of to react? Energy
Define concentration Number of reactant (or product) particles per volume of solvent.
Define surface area in a reaction The exposed area of a solid reactant that can be in contact with a second liquid or gaseous reactant.
Define a catalyst A chemical, atom, ion or molecule, that can speed up a chemical reaction without being used up. .
Define exothermic A reaction that gives out energy and so it gets hotter.
Define endothermic A reaction that takes in energy and so it gets colder
