Figurative language, word relationships, nuances of meaning

| acquire | To get or come to have as one's own. |
| alliteration | a repetition of the same sounds at the beginning of words or syllables close together |
| analogy | A comparison of two diffferent things that are similar in some way |
| antonym | A word having a meaning opposite to that of another word |
| connotation | A meaning suggested by a word or an expression in addition to its exact meaning |
| denotation | A description or meaning that clearly defines an idea or term |
| explicit | Said or written in a clear and direct way. |
| figurative language | Language that goes beyond the literal meaning of the words to create images or broader meanings |
| idiom | phrases or expressions common to a culture that cannot be taken literally. In other words, they have a meaning other then the basic one you would find in a dictionary Ex: Skeletons in the closet |
| imagery | the use of language to create mental images and sensory impressions. Ex: The room smelled of family and home. |
| interpret | To translate, analyze, or give examples drawn from a text. |
| metaphor | when you use two nouns and compare or contrast them to one another. Unlike simile, you don't use "like" or "as" in the comparison. Ex: Life is a journey |
| onomatopoeia | the use of words that sound like what they mean Ex: chatter, chirp, cluck |
| personification | giving human qualities to something nonhuman Ex: The stars in the sky danced playfully |
| pun | Play on multiple meanings of a word or on two words that sound alike but have different meanings |
| sensory details | a detail in writing that describes what is seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or touched |
| similarities | The quality of being alike |
| simile | a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of different kind. Unlike metaphor, you use "like" or "as" in the comparison Ex: Hot cocoa was as thick and rich as melted bars. |
| synonym | A word that has the same or almost the same meaning as another word. |
| implicit | implied meaning that is not plainly stated |
| nuance | a subtle difference in or shade of meaning or expression |
| irony | difference between reality and expectation |
| verbal irony | dialogue or narration in which one thing is state, but the opposite is meant |
| dramatic irony | reader or audience knows more than the characters involved in the plot |
| situational irony | a situation that is the opposite of what is expected |
