Figurative language, word relationships, nuances of meaning

TermDefinition
acquire To get or come to have as one's own.
alliteration a repetition of the same sounds at the beginning of words or syllables close together
analogy A comparison of two diffferent things that are similar in some way
antonym A word having a meaning opposite to that of another word
connotation A meaning suggested by a word or an expression in addition to its exact meaning
denotation A description or meaning that clearly defines an idea or term
explicit Said or written in a clear and direct way.
figurative language Language that goes beyond the literal meaning of the words to create images or broader meanings
idiom phrases or expressions common to a culture that cannot be taken literally. In other words, they have a meaning other then the basic one you would find in a dictionary Ex: Skeletons in the closet
imagery the use of language to create mental images and sensory impressions. Ex: The room smelled of family and home.
interpret To translate, analyze, or give examples drawn from a text.
metaphor when you use two nouns and compare or contrast them to one another. Unlike simile, you don't use "like" or "as" in the comparison. Ex: Life is a journey
onomatopoeia the use of words that sound like what they mean Ex: chatter, chirp, cluck
personification giving human qualities to something nonhuman Ex: The stars in the sky danced playfully
pun Play on multiple meanings of a word or on two words that sound alike but have different meanings
sensory details a detail in writing that describes what is seen, heard, smelled, tasted, or touched
similarities The quality of being alike
simile a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of different kind. Unlike metaphor, you use "like" or "as" in the comparison Ex: Hot cocoa was as thick and rich as melted bars.
synonym A word that has the same or almost the same meaning as another word.
implicit implied meaning that is not plainly stated
nuance a subtle difference in or shade of meaning or expression
irony difference between reality and expectation
verbal irony dialogue or narration in which one thing is state, but the opposite is meant
dramatic irony reader or audience knows more than the characters involved in the plot
situational irony a situation that is the opposite of what is expected
