LITERARY TERMS

TermDefinition
Setting Time and place story occurs
Plot Putting events in order as the story has occurred
Characterization describing the character's physical, emotions, thoughts, actions, and relationships to others
Theme the author's message, meaning, lesson, and what the story is trying to teach us
Point of View whose telling the story (first, second, or third person)
Author's Purpose to persuade, to entertain, and to inform
Mood the feeling the reader gets from the story or selection
Tone the feeling of the author from the reading.
Flashback the author takes the reader back to something that happened in the past
Foreshadow hints and clues in the reading selection that gives evidence of things to occur later in the story
Exposition the story beginning
Resolution the story ending
Conflict the problem in the story
Internal conflict the conflict the character has within himself
External conflict the conflict the character has with outside forces (man vs. man, man vs. nature, man vs. phenomenon
Compare looking for the similarities in the story
Contrast looking for the differences in a story
Cause and effect the reason something in the story happens and its effect or problem and solution
Rising action where the characters, setting and conflict in the story are introduced
Climax the most suspenseful part of the story
Falling action where the story loose ends are tied up and the story ends
Inference using the evidence from the reading text, your own background knowledge to give information or make guess about what your are reading
Drawing Conclusion giving valid evidence to support information from the reading selection
Central/Main Idea the overall topic or subject of the story or reading selection
Moral lesson in the story
Genre type of literature (short story, poem, folktale, novel, etc)
Protagonist the good character in the story
Antagonist the bad character in the story
