Life with Carbon Vocab

TermDefinition
monomer A molecule that makes up the links in a polymer chain. Mono = single
polymer a large molecule made up of smaller molecules, called monomers, linked together. poly = many
carbohydrate an energy-rich organic compound made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
glucose a monomer of complex carbohydrates.
lipid an energy-rich organic compound made of carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen, that includes fats, oils, and wax.
nucleic acid a very large organic compound made of carbon, hydrogen, lipid, nitrogen, and phosphorus. examples are DNA and RNA
DNA deoxyribonucleic acid - a type of nucleic acid
RNA ribonucleic acid - a type of nucleic acid
nucleotide a monomer of nucleic acids
protein an organic compound that is a polymer of many amino acids.
