Parts of a Work of Literature

| setting | When (time) and where (location) the story takes place |
| foreshadow | Clues that suggest events to come and create suspense |
| theme | The underlying meaning of a literary text |
| climax | The point in a literary text at which the conflict reaches its greatest intensity |
| conflict | Struggle between opposing forces in a story or play |
| figurative language | Language that communicates ideas beyond the ordinary or literal meanings of words |
| allusion | An implied or indirect reference to a person, place, or event |
| imagery | Descriptive language that portrays sensory experiences, creating a picture in the mind of the reader |
| personification | Giving human characteristics to non-human things |
| simile | Comparison of 2 unlike things using like or as |
| symbolism | Use of people, places, or objects to represent ideas or qualities beyond the literal sense |
| metaphor | A comparison between two seemingly unlike things |
| hyperbole | An intentional exaggeration for emphasis or comic relief |
| genre | Categories of text including broad ones like fiction and nonfiction |
| myth | A traditional story passed down through generations that explains why the world is the way it is |
| characterization | How characters are described and developed throughout a story |
| narrator | the speaker or character telling the story |
| style | The way a writer uses language to establish mood, images, and meaning in a text |
| adjective | a part of speech that describes a noun |
| comprehension | Understanding what one is reading |
| mood | atmosphere a writer creates to bring out certain feelings in a reader |
| tone | Writer’s attitude towards subject, described with an adjective |
| dialogue | Conversation between 2 or more people |
