Literary Terms

| analyze | To examine carefully and in detail to determine answers |
| author's purpose | The reason an author decides to write about a topic |
| compare | Recognize and discuss how things are similar |
| contrast | Recognize and discuss how things are different |
| persuade | an attempt to convince the reader to adopt an opinion or course of action |
| generalization | A general statement, idea, or principle |
| tone | Writer’s attitude towards subject, described with an adjective |
| foreshadow | clues that suggest events to come and create suspense |
| context clues | Using words and sentences around an unfamiliar word or phrase to clarify meaning |
| main idea or central idea | primary idea the writer wants the reader to recall |
| narrator | the speaker or character telling the story |
| characterization | How characters are described and developed throughout a story |
| structure | The way a text is organized |
| explain | To make plain or clear |
| setting | When (time) and where (location) the story takes place |
