Exam 3 - ACE Inhibitors and ARBs

QuestionAnswer
What is an ACE Inhibitor? The ACE Inhibitors are beneficial in the treatment of heart failure because they prevent sodium and water resorption by inhibiting aldosterone secretion. This causes diuresis, which decreases blood volume and return to the heart.
What are ACE Inhibitors used for? Excellent Antihypertensive and adjunctive drugs for the treatment of heart failure.
What are adverse effects of the ACE Inhibitors? Fatigue, dizziness, mood changes, headaches, a characteristic DRY, NONPRODUCTIVE COUGH is reversible with discontinuation of the therapy. First-dose effect hypotension effect can cause decline in blood pressure.
What are the names of the ACE Inhibitors? Captopril, enalapril... THE "pril"
What are the ARB (Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers? They effect primarily vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. By selectively blocking the binding of AII to the type 1 AII receptors in these tissues, ARBs block vasoconstriction and the secretion of aldosterone.
What is the indication of ARBs? The therapeutic effects of ARBs are related to their potent vasodilating properties. They treat hypertension and adjunctive drugs for treatment of heart failure.
What are adverse effects of ARBs? Upper respiratory infections and headache. Hyperkalemia is less likely to occur as compared with the ACE inhibitors.
What is the name of the ARB drugs? Losartan (Cozaar, Hyzaar) -> beneficial in PTs with hypertension and heart failure. ARBs are better tolerated and produce lower mortality rate than treatment with ACE Inh.
