What is abnormal behavior defined as? | Must be deviant, distressful, & dysfunctional. |
What does a medical model do? | Emphasizes treatment of disorders, as they have a biological origin. Came through the reformation of institutes in the U.S. (Dorothea Dix). |
What is a biopsychosocial model? | Currently used; biological, psychological, & social causes. |
What is the DMS? | A manual listing all currently accepted psychological disorders |
What is general anxiety disorder (GAD)? | Person is generally anxious, all the time, for no reason. |
What is panic disorder? | Person is prone to frequent panic attacks. Can come with fear of places or people. |
What is a phobia? | An irrational fear that disrupt daily life. |
What is obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)? | The person is overwhelmed with obsessions that turn into compulsions that disrupt daily life. |
What is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? | It is characterized by flashbacks, problems with concentration, & anxiety following a traumatic event. |
What is psychodynamic? | Repressed thoughts & feelings that manifest into anxiety. |
What are somatoform disorders? | Psychological disorders with no apparent cause. |
What is conversion disorder? | Showing psychological stress in physical ways. |
What is hypochondria? | When a person interprets normal symptoms as a major disease, & it disrupts daily life. |
What is dissociative identity disorder? | When a person fractures into several personalities who normally don't know about the other. |
What is dissociative fugue? | When a person loses their memory & creates a new one. |
What is major depressive disorder? | Extreme sadness, apathy towards life, with no known cause. |
What is dysthymia? | Milder form of depression. |
What is bipolar disorder? | Severe depression & manic episodes. |
What is mania? | Heightened mood, characterized by risky behavior, fast talking & flights of ideas. |
What is seasonal affective disorder (SAD)? | Form of a depression that usually occurs during the winter in northern areas. |
What is family therapy? | When a family is treated as a system, individual behaviors are influenced by family dynamics. |
What is group therapy? | Group of patients meet to describe & discuss their problems. |
What is electroconvulsive therapy (ECT)? | Send electricity into the brain to induce minor seizures. |
What is psychosurgery? | The frontal lobe is surgically removed. |
