Argument Notes

QuestionAnswer
What is the author's main purpose in an argument? To persuade the reader to believe, think, or feel the same way he/she does
Who is the audience? The person or group of people the writer is addressing
What is the claim? the author's argument; main idea; thesis statement
What is author's credibility? Determining whether the writer can be trusted
What is tone? The author's attitude towards the subject/topic, the audience, or the characters (literature)
What are some examples of how author's organize an argument? problem/solution, cause and effect, compare/contrast
What is the counterargument? The writer addresses the other side of the argument
What techniques are used by authors appealing to the reader logically? reasonable facts, statistics, reasoning, logic, reliable sources
What techniques are used by authors appealing to the reader ethically? using trustworthy sources, writer's experience is stated, writer's education is stated, writer's occupation is stated
What techniques are used by authors appealing to the reader emotionally? narrative/story, figurative language, diction
What are the three appeals and their Latin names? ethical (ethos), emotional (pathos), and logical (logos)
