| thermal energy | sum of the kinetic energy of ALL of the particles in a substance |
| kinetic energy | the energy of motion |
| heat | the total amount of kinetic energy in a substance |
| solid, liquid, gas | states of matter, movement between governed by gaining or losing thermal energy |
| temperature | a measure of the average kinetic energy of the molecules in a substance |
| contract | decreasing the size of an object by losing thermal energy |
| conduction | heat transfer by molecules or objects touching |
| expand | increasing the size by heating an object |
| insulator | a substance that does NOT transfer energy easily |
| convection | heat transfer in a gas or fluid, usually in currents |
| radiation | heat transfer through space or electromagnetic waves |
| conductor | a substance that transfers energy easily |
