Common Literary Terms

irony | when a situation is opposite of what you thought would happen |
pun | a play on words |
oxymoron | two words used together but are opposite of each other |
paradox | a statement that seems contradictory but expresses truth |
idiom | an expression that cannot be understood from its individual words |
synonym | a word that means the same |
onomatopoeia | words that are sound |
third person | an outside narrator is telling a story using him, her, them, he, she... |
personification | giving human qualities to non-living things |
simile | comparing two things using like or as |
summary | a shorter retelling of the main events of a story |
conflict | a problem, struggle or challenge characters face in a plot |
hyperbole | a complete exaggeration |
flashback | an event or scene that took place at an earlier time |
first person | where the speaker refers to himself or herself using "I" or "we" |
cliche | an overused expression |
alliteration | a pattern of words in which the beginning sound is the same |
chronological | arranged in the order of time |
primary source | an account by someone or an object that was actually at the event |
secondary source | an account or document by someone who studied an event in time, but was not at the event |
homophone | words that sound the same but have a different meaning |
antonym | a word that means the opposite of another words |
foreshadow | a warning or indication of a future event |
antithesis | a person or thing that is the direct opposite of someone or something else |
