Lung Markings

Surface markings of the lungs

Anterior Left Lung - Start Superior lobe starts 2.5cm above the medial 3rd of the Clavicle.
Anterior Left Lung - Descends Descends inferiorly behind the Manubrial Sternal notch until the 4th costal cartilage
Anterior Left Lung - Goes Laterally At the 4th costal cartilage it goes laterally and inferiorly to the 6th costal cartilage at the mid clavicular line.
Anterior Left Lung - At mid Clavicular line Contines round to the 8th rib in the mid Auxiliary line
Anterior Right Lung - Start Superior lobe starts 2.5cm above the medial 3rd of the Clavicle.
Anterior Right Lung - Descends Descends inferiorly behind the Manubrial Sternal notch until the 6th costal cartilage
Anterior Right Lung - Goes Laterally At the 6th costal cartilage it travels laterally along the 6th rib in the mid Clavicular line.
Anterior Right Lung - At mid Clavicular Line Continues from the 6th rib laterally and inferiorly to the 8th rib in the mid Auxiliary line.
Posterior Left and Right Lung - Start Continues from 2.5cm above the medial 3rd of Clavicle on the anterior aspect travelling posteriorly.
Posterior Left and Right Lung - Going Posteriorly Travels posteriorly and medially until it is 2cm lateral to the spinous processes
Posterior Left and Right Lung - Travels inferiorly Travels inferiorly from 2cm lateral to the spinous processes until it reaches the 10th rib.
Posterior Left and Right Lung - Travels Laterally From the 10th rib it travels laterally and superiorly to the 8th rib at the mid Auxiliarly line.
Oblique Fissures (BOTH SIDES) - Start Starts posteriorly at the spinous process of T3
Oblique Fissures (BOTH SIDES) - Descends From spinous process of T3 travels inferiorly and laterally following the line of the medial border of the scapula (With arm abducted) and carries on until the 5th rib of the mid Auxiliary line.
Oblique Fissures (BOTH SIDES) - At mid auxiliary line At 5th rib on the mix Auxiliary line, it travels anteriorly and medially from the 5th rib to the 6th costal cartilage.
Oblique Fissures (BOTH SIDES) - Purpose Divides the lung into upper and lower lobes
Horizontal Fissure (RIGHT LUNG ONLY) - Start Starts at the oblique fissure at the 5th rib at the mid Auxiliary line
Horizontal Fissure (RIGHT LUNG ONLY) - Travels anteriorly Travels from the 5th rib at the Mid Aux line running along the lower border of the 4th rib
Horizontal Fissure (RIGHT LUNG ONLY) - End Runs along the lower border of the 4th rib until it reaches the anterior medial aspect of the 4th costal cartilage.
Horizontal Fissure (RIGHT LUNG ONLY) - Purpose Divides the Right lung into Middle and Lower Lobes
