Play Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Playwright The author of a play/drama
Character the person in a play (part of the cast)
Dialogue the words spoken by characters in the play
Narrator The person telling the story
Curtain This term is used to show that an act, scene, or play has ended. It refers to the curtain closing.
Scenes the minor sections a play is divided into. Each scene often has a different setting.
Acts the major sections a play is divided into.The beginning of a new act can be set in a different place and be set further ahead in time.
Props the objects or items that are on stage during a play. They always have a purpose for being on stage!
Stage Directions They are usually written in parenthesis/italics, and they describe what a character does, how the character feels, or how the character should sound when they speak.
Conflict The main problem or struggle that takes place in the play.
Drama Refers to a literature that is written to be performed.
Plot The pattern of events that take place in a play.
