| irony | The use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite of its literal meaning. |
| setting | The location where the story takes place. |
| theme | The main topic and message of the story. |
| inference | The process of arriving at a conclusion based on certain premises. |
| perspective | The author's viewpoint. |
| claim | To choose something you believe in as fact. |
| anecdote | A short account of an event. |
| alliteration | A group of words that begin with the same beginning letter; Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Peppers. |
| onomatopoeia | The imitation of a sound like; bang, pow, zoom. |
| summarize | To write the main idea of a paragraph or story. |
| interpretation | To give your own meaning to someone's written work. |
