| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| compound | what is formed when two or more elements chemically combine |
| chemical formulas | represent compound |
| symbols | represent elements |
| stable | what an atom with a completed outer energy level is called |
| ion | a charged particle |
| ionic bond | formed by TRANSFERRING electrons when electrons are lost or gained; i.e. table salt |
| molecules | particles that result from covalent bonding |
| covalent bonding | formed when electrons are SHARED: the type of bond that holds water together |
| oxidation number | the number of electrons involved in forming a compound; indicates how many electrons an atom gains or loses or shares |
| binary componds | composed of 2 elements; the end in IDE |
| valence number | the number of electrons located on the last energy level |
| polyatomic ion | a group of atoms that stay together and have one charge |
| diatomic molecules | there are a total of seven (7); under ordinary conditions on Earth, they are NEVER alone |
| ionization | the process in which electrons are lost or gained during a chemical reaction |
